Global Wind Patterns & Climate


Follow directions carefully!

1.  Color the patterns in the legend and then color each climate zone on the map. LABEL Santa Maria.
2.  Label North, South, East and West on the Map.
3.  Use a ruler to mark the 30
°N and 30°S latitude lines.  Label them on the LEFT outside of the map as the Horse
4.  Label the equator as the Doldrums on the left outside of the map.
5.  Outside of the Left and Right sides of the map, draw ovals that hug the map edge in between 0-30
°, 30-60°, and
° N and S. (When done you should have 6 ovals on each side of the map.)
6. Label the left side ovals with 0-30
° = Hadley Cell, 30-60° = Ferrel Cell, 60-90° Polar Cell.  The northern and
southern hemispheres have the same names.
7.  Along the ovals of the left side cells mark arrow heads that show Hadley cell north clockwise, Ferrel cell north counter clockwise, and polar cell north clockwise.  Label the southern hemisphere cells,  They are reversed.
8.  On the Right outside, mark the 60
° lines as “air rises”, the 30° lines as “air falls”, the equator as “air rises”.
9.  Draw RED arrows along the equator that point EAST to WEST and label them “Trade Winds”.
10. Draw BLUE arrows along the 40
° lines pointing WEST to EAST and label them the “Westerlies”.
11. Draw GREEN arrows along the 70
° lines pointing EAST to WEST and label them the “Polar Easterlies”.

 Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper, in complete sentences:

a)  What is the difference between weather and climate?
b) What type of global winds would most likely affect Santa Maria, California?
c) What is the climate in Santa Maria, California, according to the map?
d) What is the climate in Northern Africa?  What is the name of the large desert found there?
e) What is El Nino?  What happens to the Trade Winds?  How does this affect Malaysia? How does this affect the
ocean water off of Peru?
f) Why is the climate so cold at the poles compared to the equator?  What does this have to do with the tilt of the
g) The ocean has surface currents in which water is being moved around.  What would cause the movement of these surface currents?
